What Square Footage Do You Need For Your Family's New Custom Dream Home?

No matter the size of home you want to build for your family, you are must work with the engineers and contractors involved to maximize your space. When making decisions that move your dream home in that direction, you may want to find ways to have more with less space. That can not only save you a significant amount of money, but you can also afford luxury, higher-grade building materials. It's up to you where you put the money, but what square footage does your family need in a new custom home?

That's a solid question for families looking to build a home in 2018. Let's look at some of the numbers. First, you might be interested in knowing what the average square footage of a home is these days. Not too long ago, that number was right around 2,300 square feet. Then it moved up to 2,400 square feet, and now guess what, it's at 2,600 square feet. That might sound about right; however, before you get carried away and make a final decision, let's look more closely at the details.

First, you've heard of tiny homes, right? With a family, especially if you have children or parents living with you, a tiny home might not be in the cards. Perhaps those are better for singles and retired professionals who want to downsize. Yet do you need a home that is 2,600 square feet? Maybe you do, and maybe you don't. Before looking at that number closely, I want to make you think about something.

Not only have you heard about the tiny homes, but you know they are a trend. If tiny homes are such a trend, how in the world does the average home keep getting bigger? It's because some people are more conservative when it comes to decisions of that nature, but the overwheling majority of people are following a trend that is much bigger than tiny homes. It is a trend that involves having more stuff, more space, more everything.

They say no matter what you have, you're always going to want more. That's not to dissuade you from getting a home that is 2,600 square feet, or even larger. What I'm trying to do here is to help you avoid jumping on some train to keep up with the Joneses. You see, what you need to do is make the decision about how large of a home you need based on what you and your family's needs are. It's about your family, not about the housing industry or what other people are doing.

Most people subscribing to the idea that they need a large home would tell you that they are thinking about their family. They are, but a capitalistic society blinds all of us. I'm not trying to point fingers here. What I'm trying to do is to get you to think of things on a baseline level. You have plenty of things to do in this life, and you need money for all things. Of course you do need a comfortable home. So ask yourself this: What's going to be comfortable? Decide what you can afford, and remember, when cutting corners on space, you can always invest the savings in household luxuries.

And if you want luxury in a nice affordable size, take a look at our single family home sites at Four Winds West in Hartland, Wisconsin. You'll find that the subdivision requires a minimum of 2,250 square feet for a one story house and 2,600 square feet for a two-story house. This provides you with reasonable options in a very nice neighborhood!
