Community
In the early 1800's the Potawatomi Indians camped in the area that is now Hartland. In 1838, Stephen Warren arrived as Hartland's first settler. He had come to file claim to some land. Ten years later, 1848, he sold some of his land to Christian Hershey who built a grist mill using water from the Bark River as its power source. He also constructed the mill race and dam that was built under East Capital Drive.
Meanwhile, the Watertown Plank Road (between Watertown and Milwaukee) began construction in 1848 and was completed in 1853. The road ran through Hartland and was used by farmers to deliver grain and hops to the growing Milwaukee breweries. As the number of travelers along with "highway" increased, lodging was built to provide places for rest as well as refreshment. The Village of Hartland was incorporated on January 18, 1892.
Education
From the beginning, education was important. Early settlers were convinced that children should not have to walk more than 3 miles to go to school. As a result, many one room school houses were built. Eventually it became necessary to build a high school to unite the education of area children. Hartland Union High School began providing secondary education in 1924. Thirty years later, the original high school was replaced by Arrowhead High School.
Today, Arrowhead High School remains the only secondary school in the Arrowhead Union High School District. The high school has a total of 9 feeder schools. The two elementary schools are Hartland South Elementary and Hartland North Elementary which both feed into North Shore Middle School. The 7 others combine elementary school and middle school through 8th grade. These include Swallow, Merton, Lake Country, Stone Bank, Richmond, and North Lake schools.
Hartland also has some private schools including Lake Country Lutheran High School and University Lake School. At the K-8 level, there are Divine Redeemer Lutheran School and Zion Lutheran School.
